Antenatal Midwifery Care

Planning to birth at hospital but still wanting the wonderful benefits of continuity in pregnancy and postpartum?

We've got you. Seasons antenatal visits are designed complement and build on the standard care offered through your chosen hospital. Hattie loved her work in hospital antenatal clinics but the reality is that the pressures of the public system simply don't allow for comprehensive education, emotional support, and care that's truly you-centred.

Antenatal visits with Hattie will generally take place at your home but location is very flexible. Perhaps you've got a busy toddler who needs their dose of the outdoors? There's nothing stopping us from running your visit at a local playground, while pushing the pram along the trail for nap time or sipping tea at grandma's - whatever is going to work for your family.

These visits offer parents the time and space to feel genuinely heard as they move towards meeting their new little person, and indeed their new selves. Information and education offered is evidence-based and non-biased, with plenty of time to discuss the many different options that arise during pregnancy (such as tests, interventions, birth and feeding options) to allow for truly informed-choices.

Antenatal visits can start from the moment you get your positive pregnancy test! No GP referral is required. As an Endorsed Midwife, Hattie is able to arrange for early blood tests, ultrasounds, and collaborate in your pregnancy care with your chosen birth hospital. The schedule of visits is dependent upon your individual plans and can be discussed at your initial visit. Virtual care is available following at least one in-person visit. Medicare rebates are available for eligible families.

Postpartum Midwifery Care

Following the birth of your fresh little person, Hattie will provide personalised postnatal support for the early weeks of this new season. These visits will take place in the comfort of your own home (you don't even need to get out of bed!) and are designed to support your smooth transition to parenthood.

Your baby's growth and development will be monitored, as will your physical recovery following birth. The importance of your emotional health postnatally cannot be understated, so your supporting your wellbeing in this transition will be a central focus of your postnatal care. During these visits, Hattie can provide information and tangible support regarding feeding, bonding, sleep and settling - all with a physiological focus that honours your innate knowledge and expertise in raising your precious babe.

The schedule of postnatal visits is dependent upon your family's needs, though recommended is three visits in the first week postpartum and weekly to six weeks thereafter. One off visits are available if preferred, so please reach out to discuss your personal needs.

As Hattie is an Endorsed Midwife, she is able to offer eligible families Medicare rebates for postnatal care provided to six weeks postpartum. Non-Medicare eligible families may be able to claim some cost of the visits on their private health insurance - please discuss this with your insurer.

Breastfeeding Support

Through her work as a lactation consultant (IBCLC), Hattie has supported many families overcome obstacles related to: Latching pain | low supply | oversupply | faltering growth | prematurity | nipple damage | mastitis | nursing strikes/ breast refusal | unsettled infants | twins/multiples | biting | expressing | weaning

Initial breastfeeding consults will take place in your home - on the couch, in bed or wherever you and your babe are most comfy. Following your initial visit, bulk-billed telehealth consults are available to help tweak and troubleshoot if needed. Breastfeeding can be a tricky business, regardless of how many littles you've fed (oh boy, have I been there!), so support, advice or just an understanding ear is always just a phone call away.

Medicare rebates are available in the first six weeks postpartum.

Private Maternal and Child Health

Not ready to say goodbye? For families seeking ongoing support and guidance as they and their children grow, Hattie is thrilled to offer Maternal and Child Health care from birth to around 4 years of age. This bespoke service offers parents an alternative to the public Maternal and Child Health system, ensuring true continuity in your own space as you move through the ever-changing seasons of parenthood.

As a qualified Maternal and Child Health Nurse, Hattie can provide tailored support and evidence-based advice in child development, growth, nutrition, play, parental and infant emotional health and much more. Health checks and developmental assessments are offered at each visit, and if required, referrals to local allied health and medical professionals can be offered.

Maternal and Child Health appointments are guided by the Victorian ‘Key Age and Stage’ framework, however each visit will be led by your family’s needs – an individualised approach, offering the support you need to help you feel confident along your parenting journey.

Medicare rebates are available to eligible families for visits in the first six weeks postpartum.
